Brazilian wax

Waxing Information

Waxing is a hot topic these days. And it's no wonder.

Imagine... perfectly shaped eyebrows, underarms free of hair for weeks, smooth, stubble-free legs. And let's not forget the sexy feeling of being ready for anything because you had a Brazilian bikini wax.

And guys... the confidence you have knowing you can whip that shirt off any time and not look like you're still wearing a sweater. You spend all that time working out, why hide those six-pack abs under a layer of fur? Oh, and then there's 'Brazil Nuts'. Think of all the benefits of the men's Brazilian wax, yours and hers. Hmmm.

At Phoenix Salon we offer a private room for waxing services. Our stylists have been extensively trained and have been doing full-body waxing for 10+ years. We use the best products and the best techniques, so you can be positive you're in good hands!

On this page you will find information on the products we use, the various terms used for any particular service followed by the most frequently asked questions. If you still have any questions after reading through this, please feel free to call or email us and ask. Don't be shy, nothing embarrasses us!

Bikini Waxing: Terms and Definitions

Listening to conversations about bikini waxing, you've probably heard many different names for the various styles. We've listed here the popular terms and described their meaning. Of course, anywhere you go, you'll probably hear other things not listed here, but this should help clarify what you know already, and will give you a guide to help you get what you want.

  • The "Basic" bikini wax cleans up the hair on the sides and top of the bikini line and goes down the inner thigh- essentially anything that may show when wearing a classic bikini.
  • The "Extended" bikini wax, also known as the "French" or "The Natural", extends an inch inside the bikini line and goes all the way back. This style leaves unaffected, natural looking pubic hair.
  • The "Brazilian" bikini wax, also referred to as the "Thong" wax, "Playboy", or "Mediterranean", consists of removing all hair from the labia, around the vagina, perineum and anus, save for a small triangle or narrow vertical strip on the mons pubis, also known as the "landing strip".
  • The "Bare-All" bikini wax is as it sounds; the removal of all hair. Other common terms for this style are the "Sphinx", the "Hollywood", and the "Full Monty".

Liquid Wax vs. Hard Wax

At Phoenix Salon we use two types of wax; liquid and hard.

Liquid wax has the consistency of warm honey and is used for larger areas such as legs, arms, chests, and backs. First, the area is cleansed with an antiseptic skin cleanser. At this time you can request Lidocaine be applied. It is then dusted with a layer of talc to prevent the wax from adhering to the skin. Next, a thin layer of wax is spread over the area. A muslin strip is pressed onto the wax and swiftly pulled off, removing the wax and unwanted hair. Finally, a soothing lotion is applied to the area to calm the skin and remove any wax residue.

Hard wax is thicker, more like warm taffy, and is used on more delicate areas. After the area is cleansed, a pre- waxing oil is applied to prevent the wax from sticking to the skin. The warm wax is then applied to the area and allowed to cool. This allows the wax to be removed without strips. The stylist 'flicks' up an edge of the hardened wax and quickly pulls the wax off, removing the hair with considerably less pain than liquid wax.

Waxing FAQ's

Q: Does bikini waxing hurt?
A: Bikini waxing is an uncomfortable procedure, but here at Phoenix Salon, we take measures to make it as painless as possible. Our stylists have advanced training and we use the best products and techniques. You can request a topical Lidocaine be applied. We suggest taking a couple of Ibuprofen 15-30 minutes before your appointment. We don't recommend alcohol for pain control.

Q: How long does the hair have to be to be waxed?
A: At least ten days growth or a quarter of an inch. Occasionally a touch-up wax is needed a week or so later to clean up hairs that were too short from shaving.

Q: How long does waxing last?
A: Depending on the growth rate of your hair, it will take three to six weeks to grow back. The longer you wax, the longer it takes the hair to grow back. Regular waxing weakens the follicle and depresses hair growth. Thick, coarse hair becomes softer, finer and weaker. To stay smooth, we recommend you book your wax appointments every three to four weeks.

Q: How should I prepare for a wax service?
A: For body waxing, plan to exfoliate the area the day before treatment to slough off dead skin cells and help prevent ingrown hairs. Women should avoid waxing during the three days prior to and the first three days of their period; the skin is most sensitive at this time. Avoid sun and chlorine the day before your appointment.

Q: Are there medications or products that could interfere with my wax service?
A: Yes. Your stylist needs to know if you have any skin conditions or allergies. We also need to know if you use any prescription medications such as Accutane, Retin A, antibiotics, Coumadin, or any other medications that may cause excessive skin sensitivities. If you are using 'age defying' moisturizers, acne treatments, or products containing Retinol, please let us know.

Q: What can I expect when I arrive for my appointment?
A: Before your appointment we ask that you bathe but don't use any lotions or perfumes. We provide cleansing wipes for added peace of mind. When you arrive at the salon you will be shown to the wax room and left to undress. You need only remove the clothing covering the area to be waxed. If you are having a 'basic' or 'extended' bikini wax, disposable panties are available to preserve your modesty and your panties. For all other styles of bikini waxing, please leave your modesty at home! You then lie down on the table and cover up with the sheet provided. Your stylist will return to begin the service.

Q: Is there anything I need to do after a waxing service?
A: We recommend an after-wax care program for two weeks following your service. "No Bump", which is available for purchase in the salon, is an excellent treatment for the prevention of ingrown hairs. If you have any tenderness use a gentle cleanser, otherwise use a gentle exfoliating gel cleanser. After showering, apply No Bump with a cotton pad as you would an astringent. You can apply a thin layer of Neosporin to prevent itching and infection. "Slow Grow" is also available to slow the regrowth of hair.

Q: How long after my wax do I have to wait to tan?
A: We suggest you avoid the sun for at least one day or as long as your skin feels sensitive.
